Artsy-Fartsy

I'll begin by saying that Mr. Motorcycle Week St.Clair has been telling the media that last year was 250,000 {on fucking drugs, perhaps?} and yes, this year was even BIGGER :ban_fu:

With that insanity out of the way, do notice that in this video, the final Saturday, gorgeous weather, 95th Anniversary, 8 PM, blah, blah, blah, the traffic is mild to say the least. Remember what this would look like 10-15 years ago? Motorcycles would be backed up for a mile on that hill. They'd be backed up down to Christmas Island and beyond. Does Sturgis look like this on the final Saturday night? How 'bout Daytona? Methinks not.

While I have many to still to post, this is the last one taken. The light was perfect and it IS a beautiful way to remember "our" week. And yeah, I got a little artsy-fartsy with the signs at the end but hey, it looks cool 8-) Enjoy, W.R.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Very nice work, W.R. Thank you. How would you grade this rally with say, 2001 when they raced back up on the mountain? It was Vintage racing but still racing, along with the Hill Climb. That one and 2005 when they had Vintage racing downtown were great rallies. Thanks again for the great video. Keep em' coming! :)

PS: Any idea, or guess, what percentage of Laconia Motorcycle Week visitors are from outside New England? Has that changed much over the years?

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Thanks, SouthTexas, very kind of you. As for your questions, I've no facts, just opinions. I really don't think you can compare anything from the past to today, it's just a different animal altogether. I'm guessing that the percentage of peeps from outside of N.E. is pretty small relative to yesteryear. Too many people have gotten rained out and never came back, and many more have sworn that there's nothing to do other than buy t-shirts and won't come back either. I had a blast and it was certainly busier than last year but it's still dying in dribs and drabs. My final video shows how much busier it should have been on a perfect night after a perfect week - there's no turning back. The drive-in will never be used again so there's another huge hole in L.B.W. And I heard that one of the remaining major venues might be put up for sale {!},, I'll say no more but if true, just blow out the candle and call it a night.

I'll leave with this bit of amazing bullshit from the Grand Idiot himself. Read this and you'll see how one man {and I use the term loosely} killed a once great rally. Best, W.R.

There was no official estimate for crowd size, but Charlie St. Clair, executive director of the Motorcycle Week Association, said the event covers so much territory that more people participate than it appears.

Despite the near impossibility of judging crowd size for a diverse event like this, St. Clair claimed that 250,000 people participated last year over the rally’s seven days, and that this year’s event had even greater numbers.

“It looked a lot busier this year than last,” he said. “It’s hard to get figures from businesses, but one told me their business was up 35 percent this year.

“Motorcycle Week is always successful. Let’s say it was a terrible week and only 5,000 people showed up. You could still say that’s 5,000 more than would otherwise be here.”

P. S. Last year, they said there was 230,000 in attendance {no fucking way}. So now he's upped that to 250,000, lol !!!! Lies, lies and more lies.

Hey, WR. Enjoyed the video. :)
This was NOTHING like the "Traffic" on the last Saturday of years past. It was stop and go (Mostly Stop) and you had to turn your bikes off. Then you'd still have them off after you crested the hill, then just roll down, again more stop than go. This was Extremely light!

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Thanks, Bustah, and you, of course, correct. Both Friday and Saturday were blissfully perfect weather-wise and yet, it actually appeared busier Thursday. You would have thought that my last video would have been balls-to-the-wall packed, with anyone from Boston north showing up for one perfect night - but no. Unreal.

And when you hear the head of a rally that's lost 100,000 attendees over the last five years say “Motorcycle Week is always successful. Let’s say it was a terrible week and only 5,000 people showed up. You could still say that’s 5,000 more than would otherwise be here.”, there's no way to comprehend such ignorance, such utter stupidity. But he still gets his hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to squander {including TAXPAYER MONEY}, still gets all that FREE TRAVEL, still gets his FREE VACATION every year in Daytona, still gets his FREE VACATION every year in Sturgis, and The President still gets tens of thousands of dollars of FREE ADVERTISING for her dowdy little resort. Gee, maybe next year THE MARGATE will be the "Official Hotel of Motorcycle Week" :ban_139: Care to hold your breath waiting for THAT, lol?

All we can hope to do is outlive those fuckers - that's always the best revenge 8-) W.R.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Wow! Is there no oversight? How can the president make a comment like he did about even 5,000 visitors would be deemed a success and not be called on the carpet? Are there no expectations, goals or grading parameters? I would think that the city fathers would be involved and that people would be held accountable. Don't business owners speak up? Crazy. Has the interest and expectations fallen so far that it isn't seen as a big deal anymore? If so, you can bet that it will die.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Too funny, SouthTexas, now you know why we have the carcass of Laconia Bike Week. No one says a word, equal parts complacency and stupidity. They were right to call him "Schultz", as in 'I know nnnothing"! No shit, Sherlock, you're right on that one. George Burns had an absolutely brilliant movie line once that went {paraphrasing ...} "People love mediocrity, they never expect anything and they're never dissapointed." That's why the Three Stooges continue to run it into the ground and everyone continues to stand around with their thumbs up their asses and watch. He says 250,000 people and 100 million dollars and everyone, media included, says "WOW". Does anyone say "how does it bring in 11 million dollars A DAY when the first four days are tepid at best"? Of course no one says that because often in life you have to fucking WORK at the truth and intellectually inferior people are, at their core, LAZY.

Expectatons? You're a funny man, ST  W.R.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Tofeather, the mild close up on the signs at the end was"artsy", the real tight close up of the Weirs sign was clearly "fartsy" - hope that helps ...... :ban_139:

And Showem, since the party line {or is it 'lyin'} is now "Bike Week has spread out statewide and The Weirs is no longer the epicenter", then we can't believe our eyes anymore. Remember, 100 million dollars and a quarter million people { :ban_fu: Charlie} .... the lies just keep on comin'. W.R.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Yeah so I didn’t make it out to the track this time around, are there quite of few vendors out there because the Weirs is certainly cut back from that?? Must be the reasonable rates they charge vendors to set up! Ha!

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Yeah, the "Vendors" have to pay $$$$$ to rent the spaces, and they have to pay $$$$$ to the city for license fees, plus they have to "worry" about "intimidation" from certain organization(s) that are always present in the Weirs. More vendors are setting up at Loudon.
Thank you W.R. for "clearing" that up. LOL

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

And lets not forget, tofeather, the fact that The Drive In, after the disgrace of LaconiaFest in '15, will be empty forevermore. Just like the Boot Hill Saloon, just like Benders next to Heat restaurant, the Drive In is yet another major venue to die forever under the supreme guidance of 'Tony Orlando and Dawn". I'll bet The Roadhouse is next .... W.R.

Re: Artsy-Fartsy

Your right Toefeather I never saw so many of those certain organizations there in one area that certainly doesn’t help. I didn’t see anyone buying merchandise from these certain organizations so maybe they’ll get discouraged and won’t have so many next year. Let’s bring back the chick with the bolt ons that stood on the corner across from the drive in with her red, white and blue trike, those were the days!Ha!

Indeed, Showem, that was XXXena the porn star, I actually did a photo shoot with her up at the old Shangri La site up the street. She's out in Vegas now, apparently remarried and out of the business. Her former husband Lance is still up here and puttin' around on an updated version of the old trike, with a nifty improvement. Check it out, W.R.
